Barbados Hash House Harriers is a weekly fun run/walk held every Saturday and every Bank Holiday at a different location in Barbados.
At a Hash, one or more members (Hares) lay a trail marked by dots of flour, which is then followed by the remainder of the group (the Pack or Hounds). The trail which is a mix of off and on-road, includes many “checkpoints” which can lead to false trails, short cuts and dead ends. These features are designed to keep the pack together regardless of fitness level or running speed, as front-runners are forced to slow down to find the "true" trail, allowing stragglers to catch up. The Hash is held in a different part of the island every week and provides a great opportunity to get to know Barbados as few visitors (or locals) do. The average run/walk is about 1 hour long. In Barbados the hash consists of all persons of all ages, ranging from 7 to 70 years, and courses are of medium difficulty usually with shorter trails for walkers. Rain or shine so be prepared for the weather!
Hash events are open to the public and require no reservation or membership, but a small contribution is asked for drinks. A BBQ is usually provided for those wishing to cook their own food. The end of a trail is an opportunity to socialize, have a drink and observe the Hash traditions which are called the Down-downs, during which errant hashers are ‘punished’ for rules infractions, all in good fun. You can find HHH's worldwide and is a great way to meet locals and expats from all walks of life.
