The Barbados Museum and Historical Society presents a lecture as part of the celebration of the centenary of the building of the Panama Canal.
Its full title is Acknowledging a Debt: The Case for a Memorial to Panama Migration.
The lecture will be given by noted historian Sir Woodville Marshall.
Migration to Panama was the greatest exodus of Barbadians, and the remittances which they sent back and the cash which they brought back had a most positive impact on a depressed economy. Yet no permanent memorial to that migration has been established.
The lecture will address the case for a memorial by examining four issues: why the migration should be publicly recognized; why so little has so far been done in that regard; what form the memorial should take; and how the memorial can be funded at no cost to Government.
